I'd like to recommend a few more recent options, FLCL was fun stuff and Last Exile if anyone hasn't already seen it. It was really good minus the last disc. Just my 2 cents worth. ~V
I'd just like to reinforce Vexia's statement. FLCL is pretty much raw coming-of-age-metaphor awesome. Last Exile had its moments.
Now, just because I have to pimp this anime every time I encounter a discussion on anime, I would like to recommend "Gunslinger Girls". It is a fantastic work of art that to this day still brings forth a myriad number of emotions every time I watch an episode. The core concept of the anime is that there exists an section of the Italian government that is on the cutting edge of cybernetic technology and uses this tech in order to implement the governments desires. Removal of opposing political figures, defenses versus terrorism, espionage and such. Their test cyborg subjects for these cybernetic implants and brain washing however are pre-teen girls who have suffered horrible accidents or injury that would of left them paralyzed or dead if not for the implants.
Each girl is then given a handler, usually ex-military, that trains them in combat tactics and covert operations. Each handler has their own personality and the majority of the series plays with the conflicts they have dealing with their profession.
I will say though that the subject material would horrify some people with just a base description but the anime handles the key concepts and underlying moral dilemma with such elegance that at times you can almost completely lose the sense of "this is all horribly wrong".
Quote :
Really, the most unsettling thing about Gunslinger Girl is not that it justifies the exploitation of children, because it never does. Neither, however, does it condemn the idea. People may talk, a few may question, but there are no answers. It's strictly business for a much larger government with larger concerns. The real point of tension here is that the series, and the characters that compose it, simply carry out their missions without a word one way or the other.
Sadly, Season 2 which came out in 2008 is just horrible in my opinion. Season 1 is more a collection of fantastically done vignettes than a solid plot line. Season 2 has the upside that it actually forms a solid plot and follow it through from the first episode to the last... but everything else suffers. Animation is horrible, the guns lose all their detail, Japanese voice acting takes a huge dive and the heart-wrenching/disturbing moments of the first season are completely replaced by poor action sequences. Oh. The music is also bad compared to the sublime choices made in Season 1.

Awesome. My "to watch" list is looking like it'll carry me over to FFXIV launch.
Thanks for the continued input guys.

Tinytimm: What started getting on my nerves personally were the never ending fillers and battles that kinda dragged on unnecessarily. Dragonball Kai is a condensed version of Z without the excess bla bla. It's actually fairly good.

I guess that's true. Myself, being an old fan of Z, I got hit by nostalgia and enjoy watching this condensed & remastered version of it.

Other relatively new stuff I've seen lately, and would recommend:
Le Chevalier D'eon (yes, a Japanese animated show about French secret agents in the time of Louis the 14 or so)
Full Metal Panic (three OVA series anout a mercenary company trying to protect people who have access to tech that's decades ahead of its time)
Aquarion (it's ok, another mech show)
Witchblade (pretty good, on Hulu in it's entirety)
Slayers (two new series are available on Hulu)
Started watching Rah Xephon, haven't finished it yet though...
And really, you can't go wrong with some of the oldies:
Rurouni Kenshin Ranma 1/2 Maison Ikkoku Dirty Pair DNA Squared Slayers
I'm sure there are a lot more that I will remember as soon as I quit trying to list them.
I have an excellent memory.

I used to be able to watch DBZ as a kid but I just can't do it anymore (like reading Piers Anthony =P). I love the overall story lines, but each individual is just plain painful to me. Same with Naruto and Bleach. I need someone to release these anime in "No Filler/Waste of Time Mode" and cut at all the stuff that just pads the episode length and count.
I watched the first 50 or so episodes of Naruto and Bleach and loved the plots... but man... at least 60% of those episodes needed a good 60% chopped out of them that were flashbacks, characters staring at each other, explaining things that anyone with a brain already knows or just nonsense that doesn't matter at all to the storyline.
Cowboy Beebop, Samurai Champloo, Full Metal Alchemist, Deathnote. These are animes that don't mess around (or at least not for long).

Yep, unfortunately, the length of the manga, and the anime, determines how many copies of each the publishing houses can sell. This is why the publishers are often on hand to counter statements from the creators of these IP's. For example, when Buronsan said he was done with 'Hokuto no Ken' after Raoh died, the publishers disagreed, and there was a lot more to the story all of a sudden, huzzah!
yeah ill agree FLCL was good and funny but it has nothing to Fummoffu full metal panic
Bontokun is just awesome..
i own gunslinger girl imo lil girl assassins who can pwn =awesome.
was never really into tenchi.
I wish they would make a second season to tenjou tenge personally i can understand stopping a anime for lack of funds or wat have you
but the manga is literally huge and they have a ton of fans to back the sells
why stop it at the freaking tournament that chaps my cheeks
but i just checked out a new anime its about a lil baby hit man who teaches this kid who is the next don in line to be a brutal assassin mafia leader its filled with hilarity and has some decent action to
also what happened to air gear? -.- ..... one season come on!!
gotta check the alien cat girls one out for some reason it reminds me of pooni pooni poemy. don know why.

Yeah, maybe it was just me and my friends, but we watched the entire first season of Tenjou Tenge during our weekly movie night (my buddy had the intro music "Bomb-A-Head" as his ring tone for a good year) and could not make a lick a sense of any of it. It started out well with the whole school club rivalry it was fairly interesting...
... and then the flashback which lasted about 10 episodes... which lead into another nested flashback... which lasted 4 more episodes... and then we spent an episode watching some crazy guy stab another guy in the legs repeatedly... and then the season was over. Another one of my buddies who is a writing major demanded that the series had to make sense somewhere so he went on and continued to read the manga to try and get some idea of what was going on. Eventually he gave up and said it was just as bad.
So yeah... Just my opinion. Good intro music though. "It's party time!"
I dont agree i think the flash backs were a little over the top but just as important because otherwise we wouldnt understand why she was like that way she was or why everyone in the school had turned out the way they did
but i do agree that it was a drag but i stilll love the anime be it bad or not.
Yeah. The first Vampire Hunter D has a better plot, but Bloodlust is very shiny. Keep on hoping on a new one being made at some point. Read a novel or two. Good stuff as well.
Watch Mitsudomoe.... its twisted, perverted, hilarious, and totally screwy.
