My new Build {the switch to Intel} Empty
PostSubject: My new Build {the switch to Intel}   My new Build {the switch to Intel} Icon_minitimeThu Sep 16, 2010 5:14 am

So after many many many hours of reading through CPU benchmarks, Motherboard reviews and comparing them with not only my current AMD x4 955, and the AMD x6 1090T, I've decided that I should make the switch to Intel.

This all started with my diliberation on future purchases of nVidia GPUs. Do I get a single rather expensive GPU running on a crossfire MB, or try my hand at 2 much cheaper GPUs on an SLi MB. I kinda like the idea behind the SLi option, since I've never done it before and while FFXIV doesn't support SLi yet its gonna happen eventually. I'm considering the possibility of dual 460s or even 470s, or better yet 475s should they ever exist.

Anyway I was originally going to upgrade to the 1090T, but I couldn't find a MB I liked and that supported SLi, but one by MSI and I really don't know them nor do they get very good reviews. And talking with many members here in our chatbox below and on Vent the way to go in running SLi and having tons of MB options is with Intel, which I've never done before. I kinda tossed the notion aside at first when I considered the price required to upgrade currently, but shortly after the SLi issues hit me again, plus Borgoff was posting links to an EVGA MB that I was drooling over. {Since I do love EVGA GPUs so much I was hooked...}

As I said in my first paragraph ~ fast-forward and after 2 nights and a grand total of at least 10hrs mulling over options I finally put together a MB and CPU set that is not only worlds better than my current x4 955, but also performs much better than the x6 1090T.

Its a very pricey upgrade $320, well $280 after the $40 rebate from EVGA {love them} but just look at these CPU benchmark scores and you'll see its well worth the update: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/high_end_cpus.html#

Plus as of today the Intel i7 875K is the #1 most popular CPU: http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Core+i7+875K+%40+2.93GHz

Also, here is a review of the CPU and more benchmarking, its damned impressive: http://www.legitreviews.com/article/1313/18/

Well after all this, it'll be for the best overall, and I'll have the option of SLi once I can afford it...hehe

Welcome to the winning team. ;)

The i7 875k is the best dollar/performance out there, hands down. The only one I'd prefer over it at the moment is a 6 core Gulftown, but those are outrageously priced.

Very nice motherboard too. EVGA is starting to make some very nice stuff.

Very nice. Welcome to Intel.

I have been mulling over upgrade options but I am staying with my set up to see how it performs first.

Well I forgot one minor detail...will that beastly SpinQ Heatsink I have fit on the MB with such high heatsinks all around the CPU area. I'm asking this on the EVGA Forums, and awaiting a reply now...man I sure hope so!

That was quick...an EVGA mod already responded: http://www.evga.com/forums/tm.aspx?m=577934

After the link he posted to an even larger Heatsink than the one I have, and says it fits; then I'm assuming I'm good to go!

Yeah I had to be mindful of that too. Hopefully it won't cost you another cooler.

If you can't pull it off, check out the Corsair H50. Definitely gonna pick one up on my next overhaul.

Oh, and make sure you re-seat that cooler with some Arctic Silver 5 or some MX-3. Makes a big difference.

Oh yeah, I've already got some more paste in the order, and now awaiting a final confirmation from Nimarhie on buying my current parts; before I spend every dime I have on this order.

That evga board from last night is a wetdream. lol If I had a a couple thousand Id buy that and other upgrades.

MSI intel-brand is the current board I have and while it played ffxiv, I dont think it was cut out to be a gaming board... it didnt seem to last long. >.> Plus the bios for the whole thing gave me hell in the beginning. I wouldnt reccomend MSI to anyone for gaming - but thats just me.

I've heard of people having problems maintaining stable overclocks with MSI boards as well.

I'm looking into either an ASUS or an EVGA for my next rig.

A-Data? They any good?

Check out MX-3 too if possible. You can actually get a few degrees less than AS 5. Same company too.

First time I used them, but it was the recommended RAM for my current MB and highly loved by many on Newegg at the time, plus it was really cheap for being DDR3 1600.

I've already got 8gb of it, and the 4gb on the order is for Nimarhie, I'm just ordering for her since she's having such a hard time with Newegg. Then I'm gonna ship my current MB and CPU and that RAM to her after it arrives.

That was also a difficult process at first too, cause I had originally picked out a diff MB and the i7 950 CPU, then it turned out that the A-Data I had wasn't compatible with the x58 i7s or the 1366 MB. {I really didn't want to have to purchase new RAM too.}

Then Borgoff found this MB and after a little bit more research I found the i7 875K CPU was compatible as well with that RAM, thus my build was complete...hehe

Yeah I shoulda thought of that. Dual channel and triple channel mixing is a no no.

Very nice. Let us know how she runs when all is installed.

Actually through much research last night, you can run dual channel on a triple channel board. The only thing that seperates dual from triple is how many sticks of RAM you're running and which slots they are placed in. Even number of sticks by 2, no matter how many is dual, and an odd number of sticks by 3 is triple. A dual kit really only means you are getting 2 sticks and a triple means 3. And the boards that say dual or triple, have either 4 or 6 RAM slots, but you can still run dual on a triple MB.

Yeah, but you tend to have to tamper with voltages in a lot of cases (1.5v, 1.65v). At least from what I was seeing.

Is your memory rated the same as your board?

Geebus this MB has far more features on it that I thought...too bad all that lingo has caused me dain bramage, and I may even try my hand {very carefully} at overclocking. I learned recently that the only major factor in parts wearing down is the excess heat they generate, but if you can keep them as cool as when running in normal mode they'll last just as long. And I read that much of overclocking when done right will last as much as 5-8yrs with no issues, well beyond the lifespan of parts, especially any serious gamer will be upgrading every 2-3 anyway.

I may consider it since the CPU I'm getting is confirmed stable at 4.2ghz, or was it 4.6ghz, though I doubt I'd go that high, but still...damn!
