I figure since we have an Anime forum category, we may as well use it.
Anime was introduced to me by my father when I was about 5 or 6. He had given me a VHS with a few episodes of Robotech (woo Rick Hunter!) and had me watch it while his buddies and he played poker (thanks dad?).
From then on I cleared (some are ongoing, includes movies):

Any good recommendations? Feel free to list your own watched list as well. I surprised myself when I thought back to what I've seen over the years.

I was, well still am heavily into anime, just havn't been watching much the past few years. Got myself wrapped up into like 70 different TV Shows of which I've dropped at least 40 of them this year...just aren't as exciting anymore.
Also with all the time I spend playing MMOs, and have been buulding our Linkshell here just havn't had much time to get into it again. I do watch Naruto Shippuuden, and was watching Bleach but I'm like 100 eps behind in that one, and I dunno if I'll start it up again anytime soon.
I did DL Gundam 00 a few weeks back, I saw the 1st season as it was airing some years ago, and never got back to watch the 2nd season, of which I need to do.
100 episodes behind is nothing considering about 60 or more of those episodes are crappy fillers.
Totally agree with that... It's unfortunate because I feel it completely detracts from the high paced flow these particular anime are known for, and it kinda kills the mood. Exactly why I let Naruto go during Shippuden.
I really wish they would stop screwing around too in one piece. It's becoming painful to wait for the upcoming war.

I'm also a pretty big Anime nerd. I started out watching Gatchaman before kindergarten and really noticed the differences with other, mostly American, animated fare even then. I've seen a lot of the shows you mentioned, but not all. There are a lot of themes that resonate pretty powerfully; sadly, there are quite a few shows that are little more than re-tellings of older stories and shows, much less manga that didn't make the sales figures to become animated.
When I lived and worked in Japan, I really didn't get to see that much, other than what I taped, and I eventually gave up on that to make time to hang out with Japanese folks. Of course there are quite a few shows now on Adult Swim, and there are a lot available on Hulu, if you're in the USA.
The industry really grew in the time I was away, and most of that was due to Funimation. They made their money selling the lowest common denominator product, in this case Dragonball. They've managed to get rights to a lot of shows, and even some decent voice actors for the dubs, which is a new thing for me, dubs that don't absolutely suck. Of course, I still prefer the original dialogue, with subtitles to help explain the obscure or made-up words that always get into these shows.
You should be wary of any occupation that requires a new set of clothes.

Trigun is a good series. Macross Pluss is short It's a part of the Robotech(Macross in jp) series. Also didn't see Akira in that list that one is a must see. Ninja Scroll is a good un. The Record of Lodoss War. If you play mmos you gotta check out .hack. I'm into the "clamp universe" stuff like X, card captor sakura, XXXholic, etc. First started watching anime with Robotech when it aired on american TV. I was in kindergarden. o/
Thanks for the recommendations Xzen. Akira and Ninja Scroll are among the many movies I didn't list. I realized through this listing, quite frankly that I've probably watched more anime by far than western television.
Dachartach, I'm with you when you say that imports to the west and dubbing have been terrible. I suppose that seeing as anime is still a marginal thing here, companies would rather have their bases covered and play in the somewhat safe 6-12 year old zone. This means heavy editing and detraction from the original plot line.
Very cool that you had the chance to go to Japan. Akihabara seems like the kind of place I'd like to visit in the future. Maid cafes are really something we should have here in North America.
While I dont agree that american girls are all fat and ugly, there are somethings us Americans should just not import and this is one of them.
We would have all the fat uglies standing outside bitching about how they are being exploited and how women arent objects and nag nag nag.
Unless of course we only allowed asian girls to work at them, but then the non-asians would be screaming descrimination.
So its best to just let Japan keep some of its better ideas to themselves... we can go over there and enjoy them. Like wildflowers, its best to let them grow wild and pretty.
Seeing as I've dated more than one American girl, I'll have to agree with you there Elendhelie.
True that something so enticing shouldn't be made to be common and mundane, but it'd be nice for it to be closer than six and a half thousand miles. lol
I completely agree! I know this girl in China that I really like and would love to meet her, but god is it so far away. And then Id be lost as the only thing in Chinese I know is nihao. lol
But still if I have my way I will venture over there in a year or two...
What were we talking about again? Im always derailing threads... xD

lol.. I'm the last person in the world to be bothered by that. I can get into a conversation about politics and be debating what country grows the best oranges a minute later.
Quite a nice collection you got there. I used to remember watching Voltes V and Daimos in the Philippines - not sure if you've heard of those but they're totally old school - I guess they were the first animes I've really watched on TV. Then when I watched Akira again here in the U.S., I got hooked. Funimation really helps put the animes out there, they even have a Funimation channel on cable, or you can watch streaming videos on their website.
I usually balanced between the anime, the manga and the live action/drama series they put out because they are so interesting to see how they turn out in each genre. :)

Never really got into Manga myself for some reason. I've got nothing against the medium; chalk it up to old habits I guess. I hear that the quality "scanlations" are being taken down now due to companies filing copyright infringement claims. Sad time for us westerners who have extremely poor access to translated Japanese media.
Again, the industry grew a LOT while I was away. In my first few days back, I was in some bookstore, most likely a Barnes and Noble, and found an entire section devoted to Manga, with it's own sign and everything. Compared to the way it was in 1999, with a few random translations by Viz Media, hidden away in the Comic section, that was a shock. In a good way.
Maid cafe'. Hmm. Well, you know what it is, so no sense talking about it, moving on. I was a fan of Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball when they were the only games in town, but there's so much stuff out there, and a lot of it its far superior product. In Uni, our Anime club had a Lowest Common Denominator day; the club President asked for input on what to have on the fliers. Everyone chimed in with their favorites, but I told him we should just have DBZ characters on it. We did so, and had a full lecture hall that evening. A lot of them started leaving when they realized we weren't actually going to show any DBZ, but we got some to stay. Ah, good times in marketing.
Oh, and as an aside, try looking for the DBZ Abridged project, it's at this link:
I do agree that the selection has improved here in the west (moreso in the US obviously), but it still leaves me disappointed. I can't begin to fathom how insipid my Anime experience would have been without fan subbed media.
I'd like to recommend a few more recent options, FLCL was fun stuff and Last Exile if anyone hasn't already seen it. It was really good minus the last disc. Just my 2 cents worth.
